„Being an artist for me is a privilege. Art connects me to the world. Creating artworks helps me to express my attitudes and values and share my sense of beauty.“
Angelika Dierkes
Artist Statement
My abstract paintings and drawings are composed of shapes, colors and space. I work on paper, canvas and wooden panels and my painting media include graphite, acrylic, watercolour and oil. In my pictures I strive for a balance between formally reduced and complex structures. I use repetition and variations as a technique to create rhythmic patterns within a motif and to encourage comparative reflections between the works within a series.
My artworks radiate energy and power, but also invite closer inspection and contemplation. I playfully combine geometric shapes, color contrasts, lines and dashes as well as empty spaces. This is the “tool kit” with which I continually create new image structures. Some works are based on conceptual ideas while others primarily impress with their aesthetic qualities.
I particularly focus on the texture of the surfaces to make it as appealing as possible. In my works on paper I combine shimmering graphite with matt acrylic which leads to a special sensory perception and a strong contrast. I see my artworks as manifestations of my commitment and artistic preferences, and I imagine my viewers as enthusiastic detectives who enjoy exploring the meaning of the images for them.
My pictures are non-representational. However, everyday experiences and casual observations can trigger image ideas for new works. Major sources of influence were art movements such as minimalism, concrete art and geometric abstraction. Dealing with these artistic movements shaped my current style. But growth is inevitable and that’s why I constantly explore new means and forms to find new ways of expression.
